Infant massages

There are many benefits of infant massage for the mom and he dad. The video mentions how much babies need the touch to thrive, and how giving babies a massage will decrease their stress hormones as well as increase their bonding hormones. This leads to many benefits such as improved nutrition, as well as improved neural development, improved physical coordination, and better sleep. When it comes to the mothers with postpartum depression, the massage can help prevent that by increasing the bond between mothers and the child because it can lower the cortisol hormones that are linked to depression, which helps the baby and the mom. The video also mentions how great it is for development of the nervous system, as well as how it enhances the bonding and the attachment with the caregiver. There are so many healthy benefits of weight gain, and just in general helping the babies relax. There was a mom that they talked about in the video that tried that massage and her baby slept for eight hours that night. The baby should be massaged at any time, whatever time works for the babies. Some do it before bed, or after the shower or even for the first time in the morning. As long as you’re taking the time to do it, it will benefit the child. It helps the child develop body image because they were able to feel that sense of love and the healthy touch of the caregiver. I learned many new interesting facts, such as giving an infant massage, actually creates the same chemical reactions as breastfeeding does, it’s an amazing time to bond. This is such a great way to build that bond through postpartum depression and for dads as well to build that healthy touch with the child, and another amazing way to bond.

My Teaching Practices about Children dressing themselves

I believe that giving the student the option of what they want to wear that morning is very beneficial to the child. This can impact their social- emotional development because they begin to learn personal care skills. The children will have a sense of pride and accomplisment from picking out their cloth and growing their skills.

When the children dress it helps with their physical development, when the child is dressing and undressing they are using their small and large muscles. Students also develop their cognitive skills when they match their socks or their outfits because they start seeing similarities and differences as well as remembering and recognizing items by colors and shapes. They develop their language development by naming their body parts and items while they are getting dresses.

The class Im in doesn’t talk much about the children dressing themselves, although they are given many choices throughout the day. Although in my class, I would love to give the students the options of dressing themselves seeing as though that are so many benefits to it. I would hope the parents don’t mind, however Ill make sure to discuss that with them prior.

When Im engaging with the child, or when I dress my niece, I make sure Im respecting the child and their space and bodies. I ask her many questions about the color of clothing. I also give her a chance to dress herself, and we always talk about her day or what she would like to do today. and we may also talk about the weather and why we are choosing to wear something based on what part of the day its at.

Overall, a simple task that we as parents or teachers think its another item on to do list, however it can spark a great opportunity for children to learn and understand so many levels of development.

My teaching practices about sleeping and nap time

Getting proper sleep time for children is crucial for healthy development and growing, it’s so important for children tp have nap time time during the day and proper sleep at home and daycares. As we may know young infant sleep most of the day compared to a toddler that plays most of the day and stays active, however since they are very active its crucial for toddlers to have nap times to regain their energy. the book mentions that a well rested child is able to participate more in the programs, therefor is the child is not rested enough they wont develop physically and cognitively as well.

The environment where the child naps plays a huge role, the child should have their own crib to sleep in and should be safe meaning no toys or Blankets should be in the crib. The mattress should be firm and the rails should stay up while the baby is inside. It should have clean beddings and sheets as well. Its best if the child slept in the same place each day.

I don’t have any children in my care at the moment, however when I take care of my niece, we do have a bedtime ritual that we do. We take a shower, she brushes her teeth, puts on clean clothes, gets her milk bottle and then we read a story until she is ready to fall asleep. Sometimes if she refuses to sleep, we stay up for a couple of min to play, I try to keep screen time away from her at least an hour before bed. We are always in a quite room so she knows its time for bed and she can relax.

As for sleeping patterns, the book talks about how each infant sleep-wake cyle of different and how it may be challenging to get them all to sleep at the same time. I believe its best to watch for the child’s cue when they are sleepy, and logging what time they usually get sleepy so I know which times work best.

My teaching Practices

My eating habits and nutrition influence on children.

When it comes to my eating habits, Im well aware that my nutrition effects my mood. Im very aware to have balanced meals and to try my best to eat healthy so I can preform to the best of my abilities. I believe that my nutrition wont have a negative effect on the child, infant I would encourage them to have more balanced colorful meals and to try new things. Everyone deals with hard times with eating healthy, and I know that bad eating effects can impact our energy when we teach. Im sure that we will teach students about nutrition about the bad side effects of a bad diet and we cant be hypocrite. It’s so important to set good example for the students and have healthy meals especially in front of them. Which brings me to my next point about mealtime in the classroom, from what I see from my field experiences, the meal times can be hectic and sometimes it may be hard to have the students sit and not talk as much so they can focus on eating. Although some students sit calmly and eat, other get very distracted and need to be reminded to eat. We see the effects it has on the students when they don’t eat well. I would love to provide a calmer eating environment in my future class. I would love to sit with the students at lunch and eat with them and interact with them, as well as model on a healthy well balanced meal. I want to motivate and encourage students to try new foods and enjoy mindful eating.

My Teaching Practices about changing Diapers

My view on changing diapers

I have changed diapers many times for my niece and nephew. Ive never changed a diaper for anyone else. However I know we have to respect children’s privacy when changing their diapers. I understand to talk the child through it, to be gentle, and neat in the diaper area. It’s important to use kind words during so the child feels comfortable and not feel like a burden. I would never be negative or have a negative effect on a child while changing their diapers. I would interact with the child and be kind the whole time. This can be a run routine for the child because I can tell stories and sing with them, to make this process as easy as possible for both me and the child.

My feelings on toiling accidents.

If the a child had an incident, I will stay calm, get them cleaned up and comfort them because I don’t want them to feel embarrassed. I will call a custodian if possible to clean the mess without distracting the rest of the class. I would want to teach the children how to listen to body cues and know when to use the bathroom, and also to respect each others privacy and wash their hands. It’s important to know that toileting accidents are not the Childs fault and we should never punish them for it. It’s important to reassure them that accidents are okay, and clean up without making the child feel at fault. Its important tot keep using kind words and then take the proper percussions and clean.

Things that Children Learn during toilet training

I would teach the child about body cues when we need to use the bathroom and teach the child about their bodies and how we need to listen to our bodies so it can fell well. I would reassure the child and keep on teaching them how to understand their body cues.

My teaching practices

When I am in the classroom, I try to say to all parents that come to class to drop off their kids, even if they do not know me. I say hello to every child that comes in and have a quick chat with them. I think saying hellos and goodbyes are very welcoming and will make the child feel seen and wanted. Same for the parents, I think it’s so important to greet them so they can have that comfort of leaving their kids in the classrooms.

The children that cry a lot when parents say goodbye make me very sad because it’s clear they have attachment issues and it just makes me want to comfort the child even more. It makes me sad to see the parents get emotional dropping their kids off, and its a constant reminder to always treat the children with kindness as if they were your own. That doesn’t mean that the children that dont cry at drop off should be treated any differently, however its nice to see that they are excited to be in school and it lets me know that they might be just more comfortable.

I understand some parents that leave without saying goodbye can either be in a rush or simply forgot. I would never take it personally as I understand its overwhelming to be a parent. They might not say goodbye because they don’t want their child to notice and cry. I would watch the Childs reaction to their parents leaving without saying bye and see if that bothers them or if they even notice.

At the end of the day, I would reunite the parents by calling on the student and telling them their parents are here, if the child keeps playing I would invite the parent to where the child is and have them join their child for smoother transition. If the child starts crying, I would tell the their parents are here then give them time to finish playing

Language for Learning reflection

1- Concept Development- Using descriptive language

  • Such as asking the child to point at their family members through a picture as the teacher is saying “Thats Mama or Dada”.
  • The teacher can also guide the child during their free play and ask questions or help them play with your toys.
  • Describing certain ideas or toys to the child such as describing the sky.

2-Describing Events and Actions

  • Guiding the child with washing their hands, making sue they scrub and dry their hands as well as explaining what she is doing.
  • The teacher playing with the child with the cars and asking questions throughout such as “Are you going backwards?” or describing that the car is rolling backwards.

3- Social and emotional development

  • The teacher was constantly asking questions and having the child think and respond for themselves/
  • Model conversation
  • Teach expectations
  • Facilitate positive play between children.

4- Responding to communication attempts.

  • It’s important for the parents to give children equal attention, for example the dad in the video was with one of this kids and the younger one cried and the dad attended to her right away and asked if she was hungry and immediately got up to feed her.
  • Giving the child choices when they have fussy instead of getting frustrated with them, for example the teacher asking the kid if he would like to look for the stuffed animals sitting up instead and if that feels better for him. This way the teacher is validating the child’s emotions.

5- Positive language for guidance.

  • Using positive statements with the child, such as when the teacher asked the child to get a toy for the baby to hold and then said thank you.
  • Allowing the child to hug the baby but telling him to be gentle and using calming words

6- Using language during daily activities.

  • When it was lunch time, the teacher was describing the things that the child was doing.
  • Explaining to the child where they are going to move to. The teacher was telling the child each time that she was moving.

Healthy Brains

What I think healthy brain development is all about…

Before I watched the video I knew that in order to have healthy brain development especially for children, it’s important for them to have good nutrient, such as having a healthy breakfast. I also believe students should have a healthy physical lifestyle. Im sure we all know how important sleep is even for adults, let alone for kids. Children should be getting 8+ hours of sleep. Children also need to have their basic needs met in order for them to be focused and to properly develop their thinking in the classrooms.

How do I feel this approach to infant care and development?

I believe as the video mentions, that having adults in the Childs life will influence them greatly, parents should be present in the child’s routine as it can be overwhelming for the child. The 4 needs mentioned in the video are that children look for their parents faces for safety. They also look for our faces for information. Also the expression on the child’s face can tell the parents a-lot about their expression. Lastly, being in tune with what the children is saying and listening is crucial. The child needs to feel heard and seen. All of the 4 reasons are valid, and I feel like they are great ideas to keep in mind and implement in the classrooms.

How I would apply this philosophy in my teaching practice?

I would make sure every child is seen, and that they know that they can approach me with anything. I want the students to feel safe and feel a sense of belonging. I also want the children to feel soothed and comfortable to come in and share their ideas and learn in the classrooms. I would love to know my students backgrounds and culture and relate it back to the lessons. Lastly, I want the children to come in and be present and ready to learn, I don’t want my students to worry about having a pencil and a paper but rather have those be a given.

Looking around on the Conscious Disciple Website…

I love that they have a section on helpful next steps for teachers or parents to understand how to proceed after those steps. I think having a webinar outline for the video is a great idea so teachers or parents can look back a specific part if they choose to without having to rewatch the full video. I also like that they provided a little summary under the video for viewers to read and have an idea before they. watch. I think the website has many informative ideas and its a great tools for everyone to use.

My blogging Journey

Although I love the idea of what the blog could be and how helpful it can be for other teachers or beginner to teachers to use and share their tips and tricks, I do not see my self staying active on on a website like this. I am not the biggest technology fan. I believe I would use it when Im looking for a specific idea or inspiration. I would love to get on it from time to time and look at what other bloggers have to share and their tips and videos.

This was fun to learn and to exposed to because I am sure it will be such a helpful tool to use in the future and inform others about.

Plugins

What are plugins?

Plugins are ways to add features to your blog like extra widgets. It makes it easier for the use to add pictures to posts and easier to embed documents and slides. Once the user has activate what they want and deactivates the ones they don’t intend to use, then its easier to use these features in your blog.
